ASTRID WALSH

Half Sea and Half Sky

Half Sea and Half Sky shows the development of a body of work, still in progress, which began with a series of ink illustrations based on the story of the ‘Undine’ or ‘Ondine’, a water nymph or spirit.  The ideas and mythologies of the element of water, as well as the state of existing in or under water became a focal point in a series of images and videos.  More recently the work has taken a more sculptural turn, with paper casting.

Visitors will see the progression from drawing to installation and will hopefully be seduced into the story told by water, paper and ink.

Biography:  Born to a German mother and an Irish father, Astrid Walsh grew up in Dublin, but always had strong ties to Germany.  She initially studied Sociology and German in Trinity and Cologne University but some time later returned to study Fine Art in Dun Laoghaire Institute of Art and Design. In 2008 she received the Laois Patronage Award and the Arts Council Travel and Training Award, which allowed her to travel to Canada to create new work.  Last year she was commissioned to create a site specific video installation in Castletown House by the Performance Corporation.  In April she took part in an interdisciplinary and international residential programme called the ‘Art of Changemaking’ held in Cork, which explored the idea of ‘being the change you want to see in the world’.  Currently she is working with the Clonmel Junction Festival on their annual schools project and has just been invited to participate in the Canakkale Biennale in Turkey.
